Am I the only one who is also impressed that Axe Cop chopped the head off of a mermaid, WHILST in the water?!?! I would think mermaids could swim very fast and easily escape any normal person with an axe.
As for the main point, the Xenophobia and cultural barriers, Malachai has told us a great story hear. BUT, I am not that surprised. I remember constantly developing plots of good vs evil with very grey moral ground when I was his age. On top of that, he has already been mixing good and bad traits in his other stories, so he obviously has a very good understanding of the way the world really is. I, personally, am not only excited to see where this Axe Cop project goes, but also what Malachai might produce as an adult if he decides to write or follow big bro’s footsteps and be a graphic novelist/artist.
Both Ethan and Malachai have my respect and appreciation, as one storyteller to another (or 2 others as the case is).
This is so dark and depressing.
Rereading this it might be one of my favorite comic strips I’ve ever read. This story breaks my heart every time. I read all the other Axe Cop adventures so differently now. Axe Cop has become a man haunted by this mistake.
That last panel alone just might stand on its own enough to be merchandised.
I love Axe Cop thoroughly, and this is my favorite strip. I love the simple honesty about this sad event. It’s the other part of childhood that I think we all miss… not just the awesome imagination, but the honest, uncluttered emotional responses to things. Bravo, Nicolle brothers.
These “bad guy” mermaids appear to be literally GUY mermaids. Mermen? Either that or they are mermaids with insufficiently long hair to draw them tastefully if they were to come up out of the water.
Maybe it’s just too sensitive of a thing to whack the head off of a beautiful woman… so mean-faced dudemaids it is..? I like the moral ambiguity in this tale as well: Is the murderous hacking Axe Cop’s fault for judging on appearances, or is it the merbros’ fault for being ignorant of nonverbal facial cues?
It takes a big man to admit such a mistake. It takes an Axe Cop to openly weep at it.

Well they were supposed to be all girls except the one mer-man who confronts Axe Cop about killing his friend. The first one I thought looked like a girl but everyone says they see a guy. Her hair is under the water duh.
