I, a white man, am not offended by white-people jokes, so you see you are being hypersensitive when you do not laugh at my minstrel show.
Because Scott Pilgrim is totally an asian version of a minstrel show! (that’s a bit of a stretch, come on admit it)
Can I offer anyone an industrial strength Underwear Un-Buncher? Or some White Guilt pills?
My point was that you don’t get to decide what should offend other people. Edgar Wright has ever right to make, and you and I have every right to enjoy, a movie that offends Asian people. But that means he’s making something that alienates part of his audience, and failing on a pretty basic level as an entertainer. At least he shouldn’t do it carelessly, which he seems to have done here. The standard for what’s offensive is subjective, but the standard for what’s entertaining happens to be subjective as well. Nobody here said that people shouldn’t watch Scott Pilgrim. Nobody here said that Edgar Wright shouldn’t have made Scott Pilgrim. Someone here explained how her background led her, personally, not to enjoy parts of it. It’s just plain rude to accuse her of being “hypersensitive” for having that opinion.
And no, I don’t feel guilty about being white. I feel embarrassed when I see someone trying to explain to someone else what her own life is like, just like I feel embarrassed when I see any other serious breach of tact. I know you don’t mean any harm, but you’ve really got egg on your face here.
