USA Today: Your new favorite comic was written by a 5-year-old
What if I told you there was a comic with robots, dinosaurs, giant fruit, unicorn-baby hybrids and an axe-wielding police officer?
Sounds like the best comic ever, right? Well, it is—and it’s written by a 5-year-old.
Brothers Malachai and Ethan Nicolle create the web comic ‘Axe Cop.’
Axe Cop is one of the hottest web comics around right now, and it comes from the creative mind of Malachai Nicolle, age 5. Malachai’s 29-year-old brother, the Eisner Award-nominated artist Ethan Nicolle, draws the stories. So far seven episodes have been posted. Go here to read the first.
“The comic started as something I didn’t plan on showing anybody,” Ethan tells GeekChicDaily. I draw with Malachai when I go visit him at home. He’ll tell me about a monster, and I’ll draw it. We started playing ‘Axe Cop,’ and I thought it would be hilarious to draw it as a real cop.”
Malachi sounds pretty excited about the project, though soon he may be ready for compensation. The young writer/entrepreneur says he’d like to publish an Axe Cop book.
“(Ethan) doesn’t pay me!” he says. “But if (people) want to buy the book, they’ll give us money so we can get rich. We love money!”
The enthusiasm over Axe Cop reminds me of a handful of other young cartoonists, particularly Alexa Kitchen. When I was an Eisner judge, we nominated Drawing Comics Is Easy! (Except When It’s Hard)—a delightful how-to book she published at the ripe old age of 7.
Talented tween Jessica Weiss is the author of Geezerville, a self-published comic about elderly superheroes. The last time I was in San Francisco, I met Basie S., a then-7-year-old who sells his comics at the Isotope comics shop.
The more comics we see from feisty young creators, the better! Congrats to Malachai and Ethan on their success, and I hope they keep the Unibabies coming for a long, long time.
